What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

Personal nformation submitted by contact form is not stored our website database. It is sent by email to Nicholas Embleton and will be used for the purposes of responding to the contact form message.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select "Remember Me", your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

User registration

This website has protected content that is visible only to members ('Users'). It is necessary to register as a user to view this content. We require your full name, email and place of work

  • New users are automatically added to Mailchimp list on registration, as part of the Terms of Service.
  • Users automatically added as users on this WordPress website: Subscribers level.
  • Un-subscribe form allows user to unsubscribe from our Mailchimp list at any point, while remaining a user on the website.
  • Users can delete themselves as Users via the website. This deletes their details from the website database. User deletion automatically unsubscribes the User from the Mailchimp audience. They remain on the Mailchimp system and can resubscribe.

Who we share your data with

We use the e-marketing service Mailchimp which is signed up to the E.U.- U.S Privacy Shield Frameworks. More information on these can be found here: https://www.privacyshield.gov/welcome

Personal information that you publish on our website or submit for publication on our website may be available, via the internet, around the world. We cannot prevent the use or misuse of such information by others.

You expressly agree to the transfers of personal information described in this Section 4.

How long we retain your data

This Section sets out our data retention policies and procedure, which are designed to help ensure that we comply with our legal obligations in relation to the retention and deletion of personal data.

Personal data that we process for any purpose or purposes shall not be kept for longer than is necessary for that purpose or those purposes.

We will retain your personal data as follows:

(a) Names and email addresses for the purpose of sending out e-newsletters.

(b) Names, email addresses and locations gathered for events through our website (or external ticket providers such as Eventbrite or Brown Paper Tickets which we occasionally use) will be anonymised and retained for a maximum period of three years for impact evaluation purposes.

Notwithstanding the other provisions of this Section 5, we may retain your personal data where such retention is necessary for compliance with a legal obligation to which we are subject, or in order to protect your vital interests or the vital interests of another natural person.

Requests to delete personal data will be subject to any applicable legal and ethical reporting or document filing or retention obligations imposed on us.

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

 

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
